Supporting Multilingual Learners with Innovative EAL Programs
In today's globalized world, supporting multilingual learners is more important than ever. EAL (English as an Additional Language) programs require a comprehensive and inclusive approach that values the linguistic and cultural diversity of the students they serve.
Research has shown that innovative EAL strategies can have a transformative impact on multilingual learners. These strategies move beyond traditional teaching methods, incorporating interactive and engaging approaches that foster language development and cultural understanding. Research has shown that they include:
Providing differentiated instruction that accommodates multilingual learners needs, through tailored teaching methods and specific language goals
Culturally responsive teaching that incorporate students' cultural backgrounds and experiences into the curriculum
Content based instruction which integrates language learning with subject matter from other subject areas, such as Science, Social Studies or Literature. It also allows students to develop language skills whilst simultaneously acquiring knowledge in other subject areas. This fosters deeper comprehension, critical thinking and vocabulary expansion
Use of technology and multimedia resources to enhance language learning through language learning apps, online platforms, and interactive software as ways to offer opportunities for independent practice, immediate feedback, and immersive language experiences
Cooperative learning where collaboration and group work provide opportunities for students to practice their language skills in a supportive environment
Monitoring progress and providing ongoing assessment to be able to address the specific needs of multilingual learners
Innovative EAL strategies have emerged as powerful tools to facilitate language acquisition and promote academic success. They create a vibrant learning environment that nurtures language proficiency and academic growth.
At TIS, we use these strategies to support our multilingual learners in a variety of ways across the school. After assessing the students language proficiency level, students will receive support based on their individual language needs. In Elementary, the EAL specialists may provide support in class, or work with small groups outside of class. Students may also be recommended for the After School English Program (ASET) which aims to increase students' subject area knowledge while at the same time improving their English language skills. In Secondary, students may receive extra support in developing their English language skills in one of the Multilingual Education (MLE) courses.
Our multilingual learners have an extensive linguistic background which can enrich our whole school with the diverse cultures and knowledge that they bring to the classroom. By embracing innovative EAL strategies, multilingual learners are empowered to thrive academically and linguistically. Every child's unique language abilities are celebrated and supported, unlocking their full potential for success.
Join TIS on Open Day this weekend to discover the innovative way we teach our Students.
