Inauguration Of TIS Robotics Lab
The International School of Macao (TIS) held the grand opening of the TIS Robotics Lab on November 20, 2023. Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) Head of Secondary and Vocational Education, Leong I On, Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) Director of School of Computer Science and Engineering of the Faculty of Innovation Engineering, Dr. Zhang Du, TIS School Supervisor Dr. Howard Stribbell, TIS Head of School Lorne Schmidt, Secondary Principal Dominic Masters, Computer Science and Robotics Teacher Robert Flower, TIS Parents Association (TISPA) Co-President Mr. Lipson and Secretary Ms. Lee, teachers and students were all present for the opening ceremony.
The inauguration ceremony commenced with an inspiring speech by Head of School, Lorne Schmidt. In his address, Mr. Schmidt emphasized the lab’s significance as a catalyst for nurturing young minds and fostering a deep understanding of interconnected disciplines. He highlighted how the Robotics Lab would ignite students’ passion for learning and empower them to become future leaders in technology and innovation.
Guiding the visitors through the lab was Computer Science and Robotics Teacher, Mr. Flower, providing insights into its functionality and immense potential for growth. Mr. Flower took the opportunity to highlight the robotics programme and share his visions and plans for the robotics team, celebrating the recent placement of a TIS Middle School VR Robot Team in the 30th global ranking, and a TIS Elementary VR Robot Team in the 26th ranking worldwide.
“It’s always been one of my goals as a teacher to give students what I couldn’t have and try to make sure that knowledge is being passed from the top down, so we are growing generationally in robotics” Mr. Flower stated “Just this year we started VEX Robotics, which is the biggest robotics competition in the world”
Following the lab tour, students gathered to present their journey of designing, programming and engineering their robots. Showcasing the different types of models they had constructed, the students proceeded with a demonstration in the robotics arena. This dynamic presentation provided guests with an immersive firsthand experience of the hands-on opportunities the lab has to offer.
