Honoring a Trailblazer: Mary Dagg Continues Her Mother's Legacy

Apr 16, 2024

Last week, our Grade 11 students had the privilege of hearing from Mary Dagg, the daughter of the renowned Canadian zoologist, feminist, and author, Dr. Anne Innis Dagg. Dr. Dagg was a true pioneer in the field of animal behavior, credited with being the first person to study wild giraffes in their natural habitat.

Beyond her groundbreaking research on giraffe biology, Dr. Dagg was also a fierce advocate for women's rights in academia and the sciences. She fought tirelessly to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations of female scientists.

Sadly, Anne Innis Dagg passed away just last week. But her legacy lives on through the work of her daughter, Mary, who stepped up to continue her mother's important mission. In a moving presentation, Mary shared insights into Anne's remarkable life and career, giraffe conservation efforts and wildlife preservation, equality and women’s rights in academia. Her words truly inspired students, urging them to take action. This aligns perfectly with our focus on United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #15: Life on Land, as it opened the students' eyes to the impact they can make, even as trailblazers in their respective fields.
