A World of Opportunity at TIS
The International School of Macao (TIS) hosted its annual TIS University Fair on September 25, in the secondary school library. This year marked the 12th consecutive year that the fair has been held, and the first in-person event in the last three years. A total of 92 well-known universities from around the world participated in this fair. More than 500 people attended the event, including students from high schools in Macao and neighbouring Greater Bay Area.
Distinguished guests attending included: representative from the Macao Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ), Ms. Choi Man Chi, Chief of Division of Infant and Primary Education, TIS Head of School, Mr. Lorne Schmidt, TIS Chief Operations Officer, Ms. Crystal Kuan, and education representatives from consulates/consulates general from the United States, New Zealand and Canada, including Trade Commissioner of the Consulate General of Canada in Hong Kong, Ms. Sarah Ip. In addition, TIS High School Vice-Principal, Mr. Ryan Connolly, IB Diploma Coordinator, Ms. Jody Hubert, and the TIS academic counsellors, Ms. Doina Tonner and Mr. Woojin Chang, were also present to provide insight and support.
The event commenced with a welcome speech by Mr. Connolly, who emphasized how this university fair provides students with comprehensive and essential information to support their higher education aspirations. Students gain insights into university application procedures, course information, scholarship applications, student information on visa procedures, campus life, and other important aspects to consider when applying to their favorite universities.
This year, the TIS University Fair included a diverse lineup of universities hailing from the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Switzerland, as well as mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. Among the participating institutions, more than a dozen of the world's top 100 universities, such as University of Toronto, the Arts University Bournemouth, University of Sydney and Bard College in the United States, were also present. Macao universities such as the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.), the University of Macau, the Macao Institute for Tourism Studies (IFTM), and the University of St. Joseph (USJ) also participated in the fair to showcase the characteristics of Macao’s higher education and provide an alternative for students who intend to study in Macao.
The fair aimed to equip students with knowledge about universities worldwide and empowerment to explore future academic and career development opportunities. The face-to-face interactions with university representatives provided attending students with the chance to learn about the courses, admission requirements and the academic resources of different schools.
With TIS’s rigorous curriculum and diversified learning opportunities, students at TIS can obtain the Alberta High School Diploma, which is widely recognized by universities around the world. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) provided to students concurrently, also greatly enhances students’ competitiveness for higher education. From Grade 9 onwards, TIS provides students with one-on-one academic guidance counselling, which offers students support tailored to their individual university application needs. This commitment ensures that students receive vital support when planning for their application to renowned universities around the world.
