Apr 25, 2025

We are proud to announce that this year’s valedictorian is Mavis Kuai!

Mavis has consistently demonstrated academic excellence, leadership, and a strong commitment to her community making her the clear choice for valedictorian.

Academic Excellence

Since the start of her educational journey at TIS in Grade 5, Mavis has consistently ranked among the top students in her grade, maintaining an impressive average exceeding 94%. Her academic excellence has been recognised with numerous prestigious awards, including approximately 14,000 MOP in Macau DSEDJ secondary scholarships and the middle school DSEDJ Lotus Award for achieving the highest average among female students. Most recently, she was honoured as one of the top international students among 437,000 admitted to the University of British Columbia, receiving the UBC Outstanding International Student Award, valued at over 110,000 MOP.

Mavis understands that true academic excellence goes beyond grades; it lies in resilience and growth. This past summer, she completed an Introduction to Surgery course from Johns Hopkins University with a perfect 4.0 GPA, mastering challenging college-level content and practical skills. Additionally, her acceptance into a competitive surgical internship at Kiang Wu Hospital, typically reserved for post-secondary students, allowed her to witness an open-heart surgery, further igniting her passion for cardiothoracic surgery.

Leadership

Beyond her academic pursuits, Mavis has demonstrated remarkable leadership as president of the Student Council, where she has successfully led over 60 members. Her organisational skills have resulted in memorable events that foster community spirit and raise awareness to different causes, such as the Benefit Concert and Movember Awareness event. Mavis actively represents student voices in meetings with school administration, advocating for meaningful changes that enhance the school experience.

Commitment to the Community

Mavis's commitment to service is equally impressive. As president of the Volunteer Team, she has initiated numerous projects that extend her passion for helping others. Her efforts in fundraising have raised 23,145 MOP for the Kianh Foundation, which supports specialized education in Vietnam, and 4,880 MOP for the Movember Foundation, promoting awareness of men’s health issues.

Additionally, Mavis has organized impactful community initiatives, including Earth Day programs for individuals with developmental disabilities in collaboration with IC2 Association, and has volunteered extensively with the Bosco Youth Service Network, distributing food to the elderly and helping reduce food waste in Macao. She completed over 200 volunteer hours in 2023, earning the DSEDJ Silver Volunteer Award, and over 100 volunteer hours in 2024, receiving the DSEDJ Bronze Volunteer Award for her continued commitment to service.

She truly embodies our school’s mission by demonstrating social responsibility and a commitment to lifelong learning, along with the ability to problem solve and think critically, all while making positive changes in our global community.

These qualities not only highlight her as an exceptional candidate for valedictorian but also inspire her peers to pursue their own paths of excellence. We are proud to celebrate Mavis Kuai and eagerly anticipate her inspiring speech at graduation!
